Indesign Projects

Introductory

Indesign is an important skill for journalism. With this program, you can create newspaper and magazine layouts, design something for print, or design a newsletter. In general, I want to work with creative writing: through projects like indie magazines, blogging, and creating a newspaper myself. If I were to work in journalism, I would need to be able to have the general knowledge of creating layouts and working with the Indesign program.

Indesign Newspaper Layout

Knowledge of working with the Indesign program is marketable to employers for the journalism/media career because it directly relates to work in media. Journalism can be a hard field to get into, so job positions regarding local newspapers, indie magazines, and communications are essential. Marketing the Indesign knowledge to employers is a plus for any of those job positions, because you can work directly with layout. Currently, at my newspaper position, I only have to upload the article into the site. However, at my last position with a newspaper, I actually had to work in the Indesign program, because we worked with print. I simply copied and pasted the article into the program and fixed the layout myself, which required some basic knowledge of how to format the article itself. However, the photos I took for the newspaper were left up to the person running the paper. Because of this, I didn't know much about image file sizes, print colors, bleeds etc. So being able to say I have the skills to format and ensure something is ready for print can go a long way for the Journalism

career.

Letterhead Project

Mentioned above and on my intro page, I want to pursue writing as a career in general. As the job market gets tougher, for English majors especially, I would most likely do a lot of "freelance" work. I also want to create my own newsletter/blog to share my own writing, so creating a special Letterhead that is directly tailored to my writing and my work is helpful to give to employers. (Although there is a lot of improvement to be had with this skill.) As an English major, it is helpful to have several different skills across different types of media: written word, digital work, (website making, Indesign layout, and creating things like letterheads.)and reporting.
